The President of the Republic of Somaliland and the Leader of Rebel Group Khatumo

The Republic of Somaliland has been making remarkable headlines for these past few weeks. The historic Somaliland Presidential Election Debates 2017 (SPED 2017) for presidential candidates and their Vice Presidents were concluded on the 20th of October with millions of viewers. This is a positive step to a brighter future, where Somaliland’s presidential candidates displayed political maturity and great understanding of democratic values. Another success story run in the Eastern regions of the country, where the nation’s president is on another historic trip. It is believed President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud is on a farewell trip around the country, but more so, to seal unfinished development and security projects in regions like Saahil, Sool and Sanaag. The President made his first stop atBerbera port, where DP World is investing a 400 million US dollars port that has the capacity to supply to millions in Somaliland and its neighboring countries like the landlocked Ethiopia and the troubled Somalia. He has met with DP World’s senior staff at Berbera and discussed issues relating to the delays reported by some merchants who import/export goods at Berbera port and the, constant, accusations made by opposition parties about the mismanagements that they said led to the delays at the port operations. The President laid the foundations of more crucial departments aimed to extend for successful delivery of the port. As reported before, the delays are caused by the lack of appropriate operational equipment at the port, where DP World resolved with brand new and technologically advanced equipment that will increase the secure import and export of goods at the Berbera Port.

[endif]--After the observation of DP World Berbera Port’s program and successful talks with the senior management of the DP World Berbera, the President proceeded with his trip to Saraar region in order to complete the peace accord entered, recently, by the government of Somaliland and the rebel group in Sool region. The President stopped at Aynaba, the capital of Saraar region, where he met with leaders of rebel group, Khaatumo. Khaatumo is headed by Professor Ali Khalif, who rebelled against the government in Somaliland, and whom his Khatumo militia has caused unrest in the Eastern parts of the country. This meeting is the successful cessation of a talk years peace talk between the government of Somaliland and Khaatumo rebel group. It is completion of the Somaliland jigsaw that members of the UN member states used to excuse for their reluctance to recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland.

Both the President of the Republic of Somaliland and the leader of the rebel group, Khaatumo, spoke at the meeting emphasizing the importance of the people of Somaliland’s unity and peaceful coexistence. The Peace Accord points were read out by the Somaliland Foreign Minister, Dr Saad Ali Shire, before they were signed by the President and Khaatumo rebel leader. The main points were:

< >Obtaining justice, equality, and peaceful coexistence for all citizens Protecting the nationhood and the independence of the Republic of Somaliland Settling all disagreements through talks and traditional reconciliation Strengthening unity and peaceful coexistence Revising the National Constitution to amend equal opportunity in decision making that is fair and is arbitrated by a permanent committee The government of Somaliland to advocate amongst the international donors and the United Nations for development projects for Sool and Sanaag regions, and the district of Buuhoodle.
